Flemish Giants

About the breed

Flemish Giants are a heritage breed of meat rabbit first recorded around the year 1860. These rabbits were imported into England and were exhibited at rabbit shows. Fans of the breed imported them from England in the early 1880's.

They come in standard colors of Black, Blue, Fawn, Light Gray, Steel Gray, Sandy, and White. Lyndiana Acres specializes only in the light grays, though we may have a white, black, or steel available periodically. We will never have Sandy or Fawn available as our rabbits are bred color correctly.

The American Rabbit Breeder's Association Standard of Perfection calls for the Flemish to weigh at minimum 14 pounds at maturity. Our rabbits average about 16 pounds and can take 18 months to fully reach maturity.

The American Rabbit Breeders Association's parent club for the Flemish Giant breed is the National Federation of Flemish Giant Rabbit Breeders. They have many great articles about the history, husbandry, and care of Flemish Giants at their website - https://nffgrb.org/.

Care

Flemish Giants do not always do well on wire floors, so we recommend checking the bottom of your rabbit's feet regularly for sore hocks if you choose to keep them on a wire floor.

The minimum recommended cage size for Flemish is 30"x36".

My rabbits are raised on Purina Show and if you purchase an animal from me, you will be provided a small baggie of transition feed to help you transition your rabbit onto the feed of your choice.

My rabbits are accustomed to drinking out of both bottles and bowls, though we recommend checking bottles daily to ensure water is still flowing.
